As a first time homebuyer, John was just the advocate I needed. He made the process straightforward, and was supportive through each and every step. He continues to be a valuable resource even after the closing date. I would highly recommend him to anyone seeking a well informed, honest, and reliable realtor.
The first time we met John, he took us to see a few different neighborhoods even though there was no guarantee we would be moving to Baltimore. The second time we met him, he was taking time out of his day to escort us on a virtual tour of a home that we didn't have time to travel to visit. The third time, he set aside the better part of a week to make sure that we only had to travel to Baltimore one time to buy a house. He showed us upwards of 20 houses in two days, in half a dozen or more different parts of the city and county. Next thing we knew, we were closing on the exact type of house in the exact neighborhood John told us seemed like a good fit the very first time we met. He was never pushy or judgmental, but he was always right. He got us exactly what we wanted on a very restricted timeframe in an exceptionally competitive market. Even after our offer was accepted, he guided us through the inspections and closing process and then, most impressive of all, accommodated our busy work schedule in a different city and took care of our final walk through and some chores that required in-person attendance. We could not recommend him more highly, and every person we worked with along the way (lender, title company, listing realtors) said the exact same thing.
As extremely new and somewhat naive home buyers, we were lucky to have been contacted by John proactively while viewing houses on Zillow. After speaking with some friends who work with local mortgage lending and title companies, they both vetted John's experience/expertise and we decided to continue to work with him. He makes it very clear from the onset that at any point we can decide to stop working with him, but regardless he really took a lot of time and effort to first educate us on the process of buying a house (VERY IMPORTANT) and then leveraging his knowledge of the market and the process through about 30-40 house viewings, of which he never discouraged us from viewing. He really counseled us and helped us to avoid making mistakes that we would have otherwise without him. Most importantly, John never felt like he was "selling" us anything. He is extremely forward and very honest in his feedback, general thoughts and considerations while viewing houses. I viewed that as authentic intent to find us the "right" house no matter what the circumstances. He was ALWAYS responsive to our e-mails, texts and phone calls and he regularly (daily, on weekends, etc) and he is checking in constantly to make sure we have a proper understanding of the complicated process of buying a house. I highly recommend John to anyone that is ready or wants to be ready to buy a house.
The verdict: John is undoubtedly a masterful agent and a veteran of the business. He's also a really great guy to have in your life. Scroll all the way down if you don't feel like reading. If you'd like to understand in detail why I gave John a perfect score, continue on. For some context, here's the background: I've spent five years working in and around real estate. In that time, I've met many excellent professionals who have my trust and respect. But when my fiancé and I finally decided to looking for a house of our own, we called John. He was one of the first people I met when I entered the industry, and I always remembered his thoughtfulness, patience, and no-nonsense style. He's owned and lived in multiple houses in Baltimore and "walks the walk." The man has seen it all. Did I mention that he's also extremely funny? (My fiancé and I especially appreciated John's humor in helping us stay grounded during the tougher moments in our search) Here's an extremely abridged summary of our odyssey in getting the home we wanted: We spent about two years looking. The entire time, John was patient, asked the right questions, and had insightful advice on houses and home ownership, regardless of neighborhood, condition, or style. John knows Baltimore--be it City or County, move-in ready or fixer-upper--he's got your back. We ultimately ended up in a Rodger's Forge fixer-upper and John was pretty much our "house whisperer," having owned a house in "The Forge" himself (he's sold many houses here, too). John is full of practicable, actionable information that will make your life as a homeowner much easier. Case in point: John advised us to get sewer insurance in Rodger's Forge as the sewer lines here can be incredibly costly to replace. When we did decide to write offers, John was encouraging and respectful of our comfort levels, never pushy, and always willing to give us straight answers. He knows the market and has a great feel for what works and what doesn't and, if you are an anxious over-analytical person like me, you'll find him comforting to be around. When we did find houses we could see our future in, we were grateful to have John's a strong and incisive communication style on our side. John is also an experienced list agent and understands both sides of the transaction. He knows how to intuitively and skillfully advocate for with your best interests at heart. I do not mean this to be taken as a generic compliment: John made us feel like family every step of the way, and that's saying a lot, because he loves his family very much! I could go on, but I think you understand the reasoning behind my five-star review. And besides, I need to get back to what I'm doing. Which is sitting comfortably beside my fiancé in our perfect "happy place," disbelieving the great luck we had in getting the house. We couldn't have done it without John.
TL; DR: If you REALLY want to buy a house and make your home ownership a reality, or finally get that house of yours sold, please call John. You'll be glad you did, and you may even make a new friend along the way. 10/10.
John Maranto transcends the role of typical real estate agent. He is down to earth, relaxed, knowledgeable about the area and his craft, communicative, helpful, smart and a ton o' fun! He 'held our hand' through the entire purchasing process, was always available to answer questions and he proactively kept us on the path to settlement. We enjoyed working with John Maranto and wholeheartedly recommend him to anyone looking for property in the Baltimore area.
